CEREMONY HONORING REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT

AND LOCAL VETERAN

by Judy Bickford

A ceremony at Leatherwood Cemetery on Saturday, June 6, 2026 brought together residents, local officials, and descendants to honor Revolutionary War patriot Christopher Brill and recognize local veteran Lori Wehr for her military service.

About 30 people attended the event, including state and local officials, DAR leaders, community representatives, and descendants of Christopher Brill. During the ceremony, veterans in attendance were recognized for their service and invited to share the branch of the military they served in. Each veteran received a thank-you card in appreciation of their contributions.

The ceremony honored Christopher Brill, who served as a private in the Bucks County militia in 1780 under Captain Jacob Shoope in the Second Battalion. Over time, Brill’s original headstone had deteriorated, prompting the DAR chapter to provide a new marker to commemorate his dedication and patriotism.

As part of the tribute, Brill’s descendants laid a wreath in his honor. The ceremony featured a rendition of “Amazing Grace” and “Taps”, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere.

In addition to honoring a Revolutionary War soldier, the Anna Asbury Stone Chapter, NSDAR, selected U.S. Navy Officer 2nd Class Lori Wehr as a representative to be honored at the Military Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C., the nation’s only major memorial dedicated to recognizing the service and sacrifice of women in the military. Officer Wehr served from 1999 to 2002, including during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach and served with Strike Fighter Squadron 37, known as the “Raging Bulls.”

Cambridge-Guernsey County Visitors & Convention Bureau Director Debbie Robinson delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of the United States' upcoming 250th anniversary celebration and highlighting the many opportunities for Guernsey County residents to participate in commemorative activities.

The ceremony served as a reminder of Guernsey County’s deep ties to the nation’s history and the service rendered by local veterans across generations. Organizers said that honoring Brill and Wehr in the same program helped connect the community’s past with its present.
